Harbhajan calls for R Ashwin's comeback to India's limited-overs squad

Harbhajan calls for R Ashwin's comeback to India's limited-overs squad

Ashwin hasn't played any ODI or T20I for India since July 2017.

Ravichandran Ashwin's last ODI for India came more two years back when he fell out of favour to wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav but from his mould, veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels he deserves one more chance to show his prowess in the limited-overs game.

While someone like young offie Washington Sundar has been doing a fine job in T20Is, Harbhajan reckons Ashwin would do better in that role.

"This is what I feel, if you are looking to bowl a spinner upfront (which Sundar has been doing in T20s), you rather have a wicket-taker which Ashwin is. Why not (give him a chance)? He has also done a good job with the red ball recently," the Turbanator told PTI

"Ashwin spins the ball, he has got more variations. Someone like a Sundar needs to learn. I want him to do well. I am all for blooding in youngsters but they must learn else they will be replaced, considering the stiff competition."

However, Harbhajan still believes Chahal and Kuldeep form a threatening spin duo in the middle-overs, providing regular breakthroughs. "They are your wicket-takers. People who are wicket-takers will always be in the game, be it Kuldeep or Chahal or whoever," he said.

Kuldeep hasn't played any T20Is for India since the West Indies tour in August; there are doubts over his future in the shortest format of the game especially with two back to back World Cups around the corner.

"You need to ask the management (if they should be playing every game)," Harbhajan added. "They (management) probably want to see what combination works well for them but good to see Chahal back and hopefully, Kuldeep will be back too. In my opinion, they are your two best options."
