
Former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener has been appointed as the new head coach of the Afghanistan cricket team.
Klusener has replaced the West Indian Phil Simmons who had the role till the end of their World Cup 2019 campaign in England. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had invited applications for the role from all over the world and had received over 50 of them. Klusener’s application was accepted because of his exceptional experience as player and captain.
ACB CEO Lutfullah Stanikzai praised the South African saying, “Lance Klusener is a renowned name in the cricketing world. It will be great to see our players benefit from his vast experience both as a player and a coach.”

The 48-year-old is a Level 4 certified coach and donned the hat for some very important teams in world cricket, like the Mumbai Indians, Zimbabwe national team, the Dolphins and the South African Test and T20I sides. His most recent assignment was that of a batting coach with the South African team during the T20I series against India which ended in a 1-1 draw. He will now be taking over the Afghanistan side before their series against West Indies in November.

Klusener was very happy with the appointment as he said, “I am extremely excited and honored to be given the opportunity to work with some of the best talent in world cricket.
