After a disappointing performance by Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co. at the World Cup 2019 in UK, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) went for a “fresh approach” and decided to sack Mickey Arthur as the head coach and his coaching staff and replace them with new ones.

In this process, former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis along with West Indies legend Courtney Walsh applied for the position of bowling coach.

While PCB was accepting applications and taking interviews, the PCB’s lack of seriousness in conducting the interview was exposed to the world as Daily Jung, an Urdu newspaper claimed that board representative called Walsh’s agent at around 2:00 am at night without realising that it was in the middle of the night in Jamaica.

The agent told the PCB rep to call in the morning and set a date for the interview but the board did not wait and in fact, decided to name the 47-year-old Waqar Younis as the bowling coach. Thus, the Burewala Express managed to bag the position unopposed for a rumoured monthly wages of Rs 2 million.

Several former cricketers and coaching candidates have since bemoaned the PCB's interviewing procedure, claiming that the entire practice was staged for mere formalities when the appointments had been planned well in advance.
