Premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon anticipates Australia's victory in the Ashes that will be played after the ICC Cricket World Cup in England.
Lyon is aware that Australia has not won a series there for now 18 years and will be arriving this time again as the second favourites. But he has faith that his team will be able to turn its fortunes around and rewrite the history books.
While his team recently lost for the very first time on home shores against India, Lyon among the senior players has faith they can comeback from that and beat the arch-rival, which itself just got hammered against the West Indies.
"We know when they’re at home they’re a world-class side, you can’t really read into too much that has happened over in the Caribbean," Lyon was quoted saying by news.com.au.
"I’m not going to sit here and say anything like that but they’re a world-class side and have some superstars in their side and it’s going to be one hell of a challenge over there. But I’m quietly confident heading over to the Ashes, that’s for sure."
Former Australian spinner Ashley Mallett recently backed Lyon to surpass legendary Shane Warne's tally of 708 Test wickets by the end of his playing career. And he is quite delighted about the praise without reading too much into it.
"To be spoken about in the same sentence and Shane Warne and the likes of Glen McGrath and Dennis Lillee, is obviously pretty special," he said, "They’re true legends of the game and I’m still trying to find my way and really play my role for the Australian cricket team."
"In my eyes, Shane Warne is the greatest of all time — I’m not even close to Shane Warne is the only thing. The GOAT stuck and I’ve got young kids calling me the GOAT and young kids calling me Gary so it doesn’t matter where I go, people will call me what they want to call me, so it’s no stress on me," Lyon concluded.
