“Our relationship is very banter-oriented”- Ashwin on his friendship with Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

R Ashwin called time on his international career in 2024 and retired from the IPL in 2025.

Ashwin claimed to have a great relationship with all three of them, but he said he cherishes his relationship with Bumrah the most since it is full of humor. When Bumrah made his Indian debut in 2016, Ashwin was at the height of his career. The two were instrumental in some of India's most notable triumphs, such as their consecutive Test series victories in Australia in 2019 and 2021.

Ashwin also spent most of his career playing under Kohli and Rohit. The trio helped India dominate world cricket across formats in the second half of the 2010s.

"Virat was a motivational captain who led by example. Rohit was a tactically astute captain. So, I've had a great relationship with all three but treasure the one with Bumrah. I would always have the relationship that is the most fun ahead of the others. Hence, my relationship with Bumrah has always been the most enjoyable.

I have a great relationship with Bumrah because all we do is have fun with each other. We never have cricket-related conversations. Either I pull his leg, or he pulls mine. So, our relationship is very banter-oriented. With Virat, my relationship got better once he became a player after captaincy. And with Rohit, I've always had a great relationship too,” Ashwin said on Vimal Kumar’s YouTube channel.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli | GettyAshwin continued his praise for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for their ongoing dominance in ODIs this year in 2026. Kohli averages an incredible 69 at a strike rate of almost 118 in nine ODIs this year, while Rohit averages over 50 at a strike rate of 104.67 in 12 ODIs this year.

"Where did they go to rediscover themselves? But Rohit had to work hard, as it hasn't been easy. For Virat Kohli, it's been easier because he has always been fit. It looks like he never went anywhere. But for Rohit, he has had to work on his fitness and his overall game. Hopefully Rohit's mission of winning an ODI World Cup happens. And with Virat, all his hard work is a lesson for everybody. If you want to have a long career, then you'll have to respect the game and work hard as Virat has done," said Ashwin.

Kohli and Rohit are India's second and fourth leading run scorers of all time, with over 49,000 combined runs and 138 centuries.
