Virat Kohli has revealed that he used to exchange ideas with Rohit Sharma during his time as the Indian captain, with a focus on solving issues and improving the team. According to Virat Kohli, discussions between the two senior batters were a natural part of their leadership responsibilities.
Virat also added that he used to seek Rohit’s opinions while being the Indian captain himself, and MS Dhoni used to take part in the discussions during the transitional period.
He went ahead to add that Rohit consulted him after taking up the captain’s role, and during such consultations, he only considered what was best for the team of India and not personal achievements.
“When you have played for so long, and you have been in leadership positions respectively for India, the goal is always that, as a senior player, you would bounce off things with your captain. So, the conversations have always been about how to take the Indian team forward. Because eventually, the end goal is: how does the team benefit?" Kohli said on JioStar.
Kohli also added that the discussions became more and more detailed when the Indian team prepped for major tournaments, as the focus shifted towards identifying problems quickly and addressing them before the next match.
“When the World Cup comes closer, then you’re also looking to tighten things a lot more and streamline small little things," he said.
Kohli added that the experienced players will discuss certain matters related to the team and come up with quick and practical solutions to implement for future games.
“You go into more intense, more detailed conversations about how we can get a particular right, immediately correct it, and utilize it in the next game. So, those conversations have always been there between him and me," Kohli added.
Under Kohli’s captaincy in ODI matches, India played in 95 games, winning 65 of them, while under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India won 42 out of 56 matches.
