The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office-bearers will hold a crucial review meeting with senior men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar immediately after India’s two-match Test series in Sri Lanka to determine whether he will receive a one-year contract extension, The Indian Express reported.
Under BCCI rules, Agarkar—who completes three years as chief selector in September 2026—is eligible for a final one-year contract extension.
While his successful stint (including three ICC titles and two Asia Cup trophies) initially made an extension through to the 2027 World Cup look guaranteed, recent controversy over Rohit Sharma's future in ODI cricket has put that decision on hold.
According to the report, selectors had informed the veteran opener development during the England tour that they planned to transition away from him to blood younger talent like Yashasvi Jaiswal. It was also reported that the Lord’s ODI could be Rohit’s last in Indian colours.
However, after the 39-year-old slammed a century in that game, the narrative backfired, prompting BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia to issue a public statement confirming that Sharma will continue playing as long as he is in the scheme of things. The comment reportedly did not go down well with the selectors.
The publication also reported that the board has asked the selection committee to assess Rohit’s future on a series-by-series basis as India build towards the quadrennial event.
The report further claimed Rohit held talks with a few BCCI officials on the sidelines of the England series and expressed his displeasure over the selectors’ decision.
Sources cited by the newspaper said that, following a discussion with a top BCCI official and his century, Rohit is likely to be included for India’s upcoming home series against the West Indies.
In 2025, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had named Shubman Gill as India's new ODI skipper, with the Punjab batter replacing Rohit Sharma. Agarkar had said the decision was made with the 2027 World Cup in mind and that having three different captains across formats was not practical.
As a captain, Rohit Sharma led India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final. He then captained India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph.
