India head coach Gautam Gambhir will reportedly retain his job even if the team loses the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The Test series will begin on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test to be played at the SSC, Colombo, from August 23.

When Rahul Dravid's time as India's head coach ended in 2024, Gautam Gambhir took over. Even though India won two ICC trophies under his direction—the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026—his tenure has also been characterised by controversy, unpredictability, and ongoing unrest.

Gambhir continues to have solid support from the BCCI despite rumours that VVS Laxman would take over as head coach if the bad run of results continues. As he manages a significant transition period inside the squad, the board is eager for him to finish the rest of his term.

As per a RevSportz report, the BCCI is unlikely to remove Gautam Gambhir from his post as India head coach, as the board believes that the red-ball team is going through a transition and Gambhir needs time to set up a foolproof side.

The report further stated that even in the worst-case scenario, an interim replacement is unlikely. Laxman has conveyed that he is more comfortable in his current role as the chief of CoE in Bengaluru.

Anyways, Gambhir would continue as the head coach of the Indian white-ball team at least until the 2027 World Cup.

Laxman had previously disclosed that he turned down the opportunity to lead India as head coach in 2024, allowing Gambhir to take over. The former player has also been connected to Ajit Agarkar's post as chief selector.

Despite the BCCI's support, India lost a home Test series to South Africa 0-2 last year, and a loss in Sri Lanka will only damage the image of the Gautam Gambhir-led Indian team management.
