The Indian cricket team faces an unprecedented injury crisis with several key players undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), severely disrupting team balance and squad selections across formats.
Hardik Pandya (quadriceps), Nitish Kumar Reddy (hamstring), Harshit Rana (hamstring) and Varun Chakaravarthy (hamstring) have been out of action for quite a while. The likes of Sai Sudharsan (left foot big toe) and Washington Sundar (quadriceps) are also nursing injuries ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
To add to India’s woes, ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled of the Sri Lanka Test series after failing to recover from an impact injury sustained on his left knee during the ODI series against England last month.
Among other players, Akash Deep (lower back stress fracture) has been out for the longest time since Bengal's Ranji Trophy semi-final defeat. Prince Yadav (hamstring) is also undergoing fitness assessment and rehabilitation at CoE.
Amid the spate of injuries, a report published by PTI claims that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will be meeting CoE head VVS Laxman on Sunday (August 9) to take a stock of the rehabilitation management programme.
"Yes, secretary Saikia will be in Bengaluru to take a stock of the situation along with VVS Laxman. There is a meeting scheduled between the two. It is not known whether head coach of national team Gautam Gambhir or chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar will join online or not. It will be interesting if both Saikia and Laxman can front up and answer a few media queries with so many conjectures," a BCCI source told the news agency on conditions of anonymity.
This report also highlights a critical communication gap and operational friction between the CoE and the national selection committee regarding player fitness and injury clearance.
Notably, Rana arrived in England noticeably overweight, leading to severe cramping and frustration from the selection panel. Similarly, Bumrah was expected to play at least one Test against Sri Lanka, but recovery stalled due to lingering water retention in his knee.
In case of Sudharsan, the southpaw resumed limited batting but chronic pain persists in his big toe.
Nitish Kumar Reddy suffered hamstring and quadriceps strains after aggressively trying to increase his bowling pace by 7 to 8 km/h.
