During the T20 World Cup 2016, MS Dhoni's spectacular run-out helped India snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat against Bangladesh at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The Tigers needed one run to draw the game and two runs to win on the last ball of the final over, but Dhoni’s brilliance left them heartbroken.

The game's final over was bowled by Hardik Pandya, who delivered a dot ball. The Bangladeshi batters attempted to steal a single that would have tied the score, but Dhoni took his right glove off even before the ball was bowled, dashed to the stumps and ran Mustafizur Rahman out, giving India a one-run victory.

Mahmudullah, who was dismissed on the penultimate delivery of that final over by Hardik, recalled the agonizing moment a decade later while making an appearance on the podcast Simply Sayeed.

“I do not know what happened in that game against India. That was tragic. It was very heartbreaking. I think it was extremely heartbreaking. We cried on the ground. When we got back to the hotel, we cried. Me, Mushfiqur Rahim, we all cried. Many other members were crying as well because we were so close to beating India,” Mahmudullah said.

“But personally, in my life, that was a very life-changing lesson for me. You drag it to the last ball and you finish it off. At that particular moment, I was thinking that if we just hit one boundary, we would win. To be honest, that was dumb,” he added.

It was a must-win game for the Men in Blue to stay alive in the competition after they lost to New Zealand in Nagpur.

The nail-biting victory over Bangladesh revived India’s campaign as they went on to reach the semifinals, where eventual champions West Indies defeated them at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
