Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed positively to India’s amazing win over Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC U19 World Cup 2026 on January 17, 2026. India U19 registered a brilliant comeback win, defeating Bangladesh by 18 runs in a rain-affected match.
Sooryavanshi hammered 72 runs with 6 fours and 3 sixes after India was asked to bat first by Bangladesh in the game that was played in Bulawayo. India U19’s top order failed, as apart from Sooryavanshi, Abhigyan Kundu’s 80 and Kanish Chouhan’s 28 were the only other notable scores as the young colts posted 238 in 48.4 overs.
Bangladesh’s chase was curtailed to 165 runs in 29 overs, and they started well with Rifat Beg (37) and skipper Azizul Hakim (51), who took the side to 106/2 in the 22nd over.
However, then Vihaan Malhotra starred with the ball, as he took 4/14, resulting in Bangladesh collapsing to 146 all out in 28.3 overs. India won the game by 18 runs via the DLS method.
Sooryavanshi, apart from scoring 72 runs, also took a stunning catch at the boundary at a crucial juncture.
It happened on the second ball of the 26th over, with Bangladesh at 129/5 in the chase. Samiun Basir Ratul struck a lofted inside-out shot to long-off against Vihaan Malhotra, and the ball appeared to go just past the boundary rope.
Sooryavanshi, although not being the tallest, was assigned to patrol the position and ran to settle under it. He caught the ball with his hands beyond the boundary line, tossed it far into the air when he realized his momentum was propelling him off the ground, then returned and retrieved it gently.
Fans compared this catch to Suryakumar Yadav's catch in the final over of the 2024 T20 World Cup final, which dismissed David Miller. Although it was a longer and more difficult take, Sooryavanshi had a comparable presence of mind in crunch time.
