Babar Azam and Steve Smith's relationship has been in the limelight since the Sydney Sixers' latest BBL match last Friday against the Sydney Thunder in Sydney. Smith denied Babar a single in the 11th over of the Sixers' innings, as the Australian looked to seize control in the opening over of the Power Surge.
Smith vindicated his decision by slamming four consecutive fours in the next over, helping the Sixers score 32 runs. Meanwhile, Babar was removed in the following over and was seen angry as he walked back, banging the boundary pads. Smith was also furious at Babar after a fielding error.
Speaking to reporters after the Sixers' BBL match against the Brisbane Heat on Sunday, Smith downplayed reports that they had a falling out and said that they worked things out during a round of golf.
It seems like Babar Azam and Steve Smith have made up in actuality, as something heartwarming was seen when the Sixers faced off against the Brisbane Heat in Brisbane on January 18, 2026.
The incident happened in the fifth over, when on the last ball of the over, Nathan McSweeney cut a Sean Abbott short ball outside off towards the backward point fielder. The ball flew towards Steve Smith, who was stationed at the position, and despite a valiant effort, Smith couldn’t manage to hold onto the catch.
As Smith sat in surprise, Babar Azam ran towards him from far off and consoled him for dropping the catch.

In response, while Steve Smith had scored an unbeaten 50 at the time of writing this piece, Babar Azam fell for one run in seven balls.
