The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning a review meeting to discuss the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODIs.
Having retired from T20Is and Tests, Rohit and Kohli have now become one-format players for the national team. They last played for India in the ODI series against Australia last month. The Australia tour marked their return to international cricket for the first time since Champions Trophy 2025 triumph in March.
While Rohit returned with scores of 8, 73, and 121* in three games, Kohli bagged two successive ducks before scoring 74* in the series finale. The veteran campaigners stitched an unbeaten 168-run stand to help India pull off a consolation win in Sydney.
However, with fewer ODIs being scheduled these days, questions remain over the ageing duo's future, especially their participation in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
According to a TOI report, senior BCCI officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will meet in Ahmedabad after the third ODI against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on December 6 to “firm up a plan on Rohit and Kohli’s future" in the ODI setup.
The discussion is expected to provide clarity on the roles of both batting stalwarts, while the management is also likely to identify potential backups.
“It is very important that players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature are given clarity about what is expected of them and how the current management views their roles. They can’t just be playing with uncertainty,” a BCCI source said, as quoted by the publication.
“They did score runs in the third ODI in Australia. But the series was already lost, and the match was set up by the bowlers in the first innings. They looked rusty in the first two matches. One can’t afford that in every series," the source added.
The Indian team management reportedly wants Rohit Sharma to maintain his attacking style, as he appeared more cautious and took longer to settle in Australia. The senior batters are expected to set the tone for younger teammates in the lineup.
“It is expected that he continues to lead by example as a fearless batter at the top of the order. The conditions were tough in Australia but it did look like he was avoiding taking risks. Both are expected to lead the batting to make it easier for the rest of the younger batters around them,” said sources.
As per the report, the board also expects Rohit and Kohli to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy next month. India have three ODIs scheduled against New Zealand at home in January 2026, followed by their next major 50-over assignment -- a three-match series in England in July.
