Rohit Sharma, legendary batter and ex-India captain, who had earned the no. 1 spot in the ICC batting rankings in ODI cricket after his exploits in the Australia ODI series, had been dethroned. Rohit Sharma had scored 8, 73, and 121* in the three ODIs and earned the Player of the Series award as well.

However, Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand has dethroned Rohit Sharma, as he has risen to the no. 1 spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings, thanks to his seventh century in the format, which came in the first match of the ongoing series against the West Indies. Mitchell had made 119 with 12 fours and two sixes as he helped New Zealand make 269/7 as the Kiwis pulled off a 7-run win.

Mitchell became the second Kiwi to reach the top of the ODI batting rankings. The only previous New Zealander to do so was Glenn Turner, who last topped the charts in 1979. 

Several New Zealand batters, including Martin Crowe, Andrew Jones, Roger Twose, Nathan Astle, Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill, and Ross Taylor, have previously cracked the top five, but none have reached number one.

On the other hand, Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan climbed five places to become joint 22nd, and Fakhar Zaman moved up to become joint 26th in batting rankings. Among the bowlers, spinner Abrar Ahmed jumped 11 places to ninth, and pacer Haris Rauf gained five spots to 23rd.

The end of the first Test between India and South Africa in Kolkata also brought changes in the ICC Test Players rankings. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma entered the top five Test batters for the first time, while Shubman Gill rose two places to 11th despite sustaining an injury during the match.

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah remained the No. 1 Test bowler after taking six wickets at Eden Gardens.  Kuldeep Yadav moved up two spots to a career-best 13th, while Ravindra Jadeja moved up four to 15th.  

Marco Jansen went up to 11th among Test bowlers and fifth among all-rounders, while Simon Harmer soared 20 places to 24th following a solid performance.
