At the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) v Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL 2025 match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 3, a contentious LBW call featuring CSK’s Dewald Brevis generated intense debate.
Brevis was dismissed LBW even though replays showed the ball would have missed the stumps because he missed the review window while sprinting between wickets.
The crucial moment came during CSK's 214-run chase in the 17th over. Brevis was hit on the pad by a knee-high full delivery from Lungi Ngidi, which caused the umpire to lift his finger instantly.
As the fielder hit the non-striker's end directly from point, Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja, who seemed perplexed by the circumstance, kept running a single. When Brevis finally attempted to review the decision, he was informed that the 15-second time limit had expired.
Brevis and Jadeja engaged in a heated debate with umpires Nitin Menon and Mohit Krishnadas as a result of the circumstance. Replays later verified that the ball would have missed the leg stump, forcing Brevis to leave for a first-ball duck.
Stephen Fleming, the CSK head coach, reflected on the Brevis incident and stated that it was a huge moment in the match.
"Yeah, it was a big moment. In talking to Jaddu and Brevis, a lot was going on with running straight away. I think they saw the ball ricochet and actually went to the boundary for four. And lost in that was whether Brevis took the review in time. I don't know the answer to that. He wasn't sure, given that they were running at the time," said CSK coach Stephen Fleming after the match.
"As soon as you're given out, I understand the timer starts. There was a fair bit eaten up with the play still being completed, and whether they just ran out of time... in the umpire's view, it did. The other part about it, because he was given out, we wouldn't have gotten the runs. While we would have maintained the wicket, it certainly wouldn't have given us the five runs, which would have been nice. But it's a big moment in a big game. There was twists and turns all the way through," Fleming added.
Players have 15 seconds between the ball going dead and asking for a review, according to the IPL 2025 playing standards. Umpires have the authority to reject the review request if they feel that the allotted time has been exceeded.
