After struggling for runs in the first half of IPL 2025, veteran Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma has regained his form and will enter Sunday’s (April 27) contest against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on the back of back-to-back fifty-plus scores.
The 37-year-old played a match-winning knock of 76* from 45 balls against CSK at the Wankhede Stadium on April 20, and in the next fixture against SRH at Hyderabad on April 23, he scored 70 runs from 46 balls to set up a 7-wicket win for the Hardik Pandya-led side.
On the eve of the LSG clash, MI batting coach Kieron Pollard said he was always confident in Rohit Sharma to rediscover his best form amidst his recent slump.
“For us (MI), we always had that belief that he’s (Rohit) going to come good. I just want to continue to urge you guys, at times, sometimes it gives guys opportunity," Pollard told reporters in the pre-match presser.
“There’s dips, there’s low confidence. But for someone who has played this sport for a long time, you have these moments, and sometimes you just need that extra support from people," he added.
Pollard reflected on how it is only natural that someone of the class of Rohit was able to find his mojo at the right time, as MI now find themselves in pursuit of a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs.
“Now, we’re singing his praises; we’re all very happy. In the Mumbai dressing room, we were happy at the start as well, knowing that it was going to happen and long may it continue so the headlines are going to be about that," he mentioned.
Rohit Sharma will be expected to continue his rich vein of form against LSG at the Wankhede Stadium. When the two teams had met at the Ekana Cricket Stadium earlier this month, Rohit didn’t play due to an injury-related issue.
Both teams are alive in the race to qualify for IPL 2025 playoffs. While MI are holding fifth spot on the points table, LSG are occupying sixth position in the team standings.
