Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 56th match of the ongoing IPL 2024. This match was played on May 7, 2024, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Sanju Samson, the RR captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first. DC openers Abishek Porel (65 in 36 balls) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (50 in 20 balls) added 60 in 4.2 overs to give a flying start to their team.
Then RR hit back with wickets of the openers and Shai Hope (1), Akshar Patel (15), and Rishabh Pant (15) and DC looked like finishing below 200 runs in their 20 overs. However, Tristan Stubbs (41 in 20) and Gulbadin Naib (19) helped DC post 221/8 in 20 overs.
R Ashwin was the pick of RR bowlers with figures of 3/24.
In reply, Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to score big and got out for 4, while Jos Buttler was castled for 19 runs. Sanju Samson shouldered the chase with a brilliant knock of 86 in 46 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes to his name.
However, his wicket in the 16th over proved to be the end of RR’s attempt to chase the big score. Mukesh Kumar bowled a slower length ball and Sanju pulled it towards the long-on position Shai Hope ran in to take a brilliant catch near the boundary.
However, Sanju and the umpires were not satisfied and the decision went to the TV umpire to check if Hope’s feet had touched the boundary padding. The TV umpire saw the replay from various angles and concluded that the catch was safe.
The replays showed that the feet were too close to the boundary pads and Samson went back to the umpires to discuss the decision.
During this melee, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal was seen making animated gestures and shouting something from the stands in a viral video.
