IPL 2024: Cricket fraternity reacts as Jasprit Bumrah helps MI survive Ashutosh Sharma scare; defeat PBKS by 9 runs

Ashutosh Sharma | BCCI-IPLMumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) clashed in a thrilling match of the IPL 2024 which was played at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

PBKS captain Sam Curran won the toss and chose to bowl first. Ishan Kishan got out early for 8 runs, but Rohit Sharma (36) and Suryakumar Yadav added 81 runs for the second wicket to lay a good platform for the MI batters.

Suryakumar Yadav made 78 runs in 53 balls with 3 sixes and 7 fours. Tilak Varma made 34*, while Tim David made 14 runs as MI posted 192/7 in 20 overs. PBKS managed to pull back a little thanks to Harshal Patel’s three wickets in the 20th over of MI innings.

In response, Punjab Kings had a horror start to their innings. Gerald Coetzee dismissed Prabhsimran Singh for a golden duck in the opening over. Then Jasprit Bumrah shook the PBKS top order by dismissing Rilee Russouw and Sam Curran.

Jasprit Bumrah | BCCI-IPLPBKS was quickly down to 77/6, but Shashank Singh (41 in 25 balls) and Ashutosh Sharma banded together to try and pull off another rescue. Ashutosh was the highlight of the PBKS innings, scoring 61 in 28 balls with seven sixes and two fours. But he was dismissed with PBKS needing 25 runs.

Despite the tail's best efforts, PBKS failed to cross the finish line, being bowled out for 182 in 19.1 overs. MI won an exciting game by just nine runs.

Jasprit Bumrah with 3/21 and Gerald Coetzee with 3/32 were the pick of the MI bowlers. Bumrah was named the Player of the Match for his brilliant opening spell, which kept PBKS from getting a flying start.
