Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) clashed in the 33rd match of the IPL 2024 tournament on April 18. The match has been hosted by the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur.
PBKS captain Sam Curran won the toss and chose to bowl first. Ishan Kishan got out early for 8 runs, but Rohit Sharma (36) and Suryakumar Yadav added 81 runs for the second wicket to lay a good platform for the MI batters.
Suryakumar Yadav made 78 runs in 53 balls with 3 sixes and 7 fours. Tilak Varma made 34*, while Tim David made 14 runs as MI posted 192/7 in 20 overs. PBKS managed to pull back a little thanks to Harshal Patel’s three wickets in the 20th over of MI innings.
Punjab Kings needed a good start and captain Sam Curran opened the innings with Prabhsimran Singh. However, Prabhsimran was dismissed in the first over by Gerald Coetzee for a golden duck.
But it was the magician from MI, Jasprit Bumrah who landed a telling blow on PBKS side as he clean bowled their debutant Rilee Russouw. Russouw was a big ticket buy for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024 auction, costing them INR 8 crores.
However, Bumrah surprised him with a speedy, inswinging yorker from over the wicket, that swung into Russouw and then clattered his stumps. Russouw could only contribute 1 run in the three balls he faced in his first match for Punjab in IPL 2024.
