Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Nitish Rana was left furious at the umpires during his team’s IPL 2023 fixture against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday (May 14).
Vaibhav Arora was about to bowl the last over of CSK’s innings when KKR were punished due to their slow over rate. Under new laws, they became bound to keep a maximum of four fielders outside the circle rather than five.
The turn of events left Rana disappointed as he had a heated argument with the on-field umpires.

Meanwhile, Nitish Rana has been fined a hefty amount of Rs 24 lakhs for maintaining a slow over-rate against CSK.
Since it was KKR’s second offence in the ongoing season, each member of the playing XI has also been slapped with a fine of Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee.
“Nitish Rana has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Chennai Super Kings at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 14, 2023,” the official IPL release read.
“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Rana has been fined Rs. 24 lakh and each member of the Playing XI, including the impact substitute, is fined Rs. 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee, whichever is lesser,” it added.
Coming to the match, Chennai Super Kings succumbed to a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders.
Opting to bat first, the hosts posted a modest 144/6 on the board. It was a disappointing batting display as no batter managed to hit a half-century. Shivam Dube was the top scorer with 48 not out off 34 balls.
In reply, KKR rode on half-centuries from Nitish Rana (57* off 44) and Rinku Singh (54 off 43) to overhaul the target with 9 deliveries to spare.
