Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) clashed in the 57th match of the IPL 2023 being played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 12, 2023.
Hardik Pandya, the GT captain, won the toss and decided to chase as no total is seemingly defendable on the Wankhede pitch off late. Both the teams came into this match unchanged.
MI had a flying start as openers Ishan Kishan (31 in 20) and Rohit Sharma (29 in 18) added 61 runs in 6 overs. However, GT vice-captain, Rashid Khan 4/30 came into the attack and removed Rohit, Ishan, and Nehal Wadhera in quick succession.
Then Vishnu Vinod (30) added 65 runs with Suryakumar Yadav, who hammered on 103* in 49 balls with 11 fours and 6 sixes. His blitz took MI to a final total of 218/5 in 20 overs.
In response, GT started poorly and kept losing wickets at regular intervals with David Miller (41), and Vijay Shankar (29) making some runs. At 103/8, Rashid Khan threw caution to the wind and hammered 10 sixes and 3 fours in his 32-ball 79*, and added 88* runs in 40 balls for the 9th wicket with Alzarri Joseph (7*).
Akash Madhwal picked three wickets for MI, as GT finished on 191/8 and lost by 27 runs.
With this win, MI jumped to the 3rd spot in the points table with 14 points in 12 games with 7 wins, while GT remain no.1.
