The name of Suryakumar Yadav was chanted thanks to his sparkling century when Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) clashed in the 57th match of the IPL 2023 being played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 12, 2023.
Hardik Pandya, the GT captain, won the toss and decided to chase as no total is seemingly defendable on the Wankhede pitch off late. Both the teams came into this match unchanged.
MI had a flying start as openers Ishan Kishan (31 in 20) and Rohit Sharma (29 in 18) added 61 runs in 6 overs. However, Rashid Khan, who picked 4/30 in the match got rid of the openers and the dangerous Nehal Wadhera.
Then, Vishnu Vinod (30 in 20) added 65 runs with Suryakumar Yadav, who unleashed himself on the MI bowlers. The MI vice-captain hammered the best of GT bowlers everywhere in the ground.
IPL 2023: Cricket fraternity reacts as Suryakumar Yadav’s jaw-dropping 103* takes MI to 218/5 vs GT
He finished with his maiden IPL hundred- 103* in 49 balls with 11 fours and 6 sixes as MI posted 218/5 in 20 overs.
One of his sixes was a mind-boggling shot off Mohammad Shami. The GT strike bowler bowled a full delivery outside off-stump and Suryakumar poised to hit the ball to covers, somehow using his wrists, lofted it into the crowd over third man.
The shot even left Shami admiring the guile of Suryakumar. Meanwhile, Shami wasn’t the only one who was impressed, but MI mentor Sachin Tendulkar was seen replicating the shot with his hand and explaining how it was hit to Piyush Chawla who was seated next to him.

Tendulkar also took to Twitter to appreciate the mastery of Suryakumar's shot off Shami.
