Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) met in the 54th match of the IPL 2023 in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on May 9. Both the teams came into this encounter with 10 points each.
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. Chris Jordan made his MI debut in this match. Virat Kohli fell for 1 and Anuj Rawat fell for 6 runs at the start.
After losing two wickets early in the contest, skipper Faf Du Plessis (65) and Glenn Maxwell (68 in 33 balls) proved to be saviors of Bangalore’s resurrection as the duo put together a stunning 120-run stand for the third wicket to push their team right back into the game.
RCB’s score moved from 136/2 to 146/5 with Jason Behrendorff providing the team with the breakthrough of Rawat and Maxwell, while Cameron Green got Du Plessis.
Dinesh Karthik stepped up the plate to deliver a crucial innings for his side as he scored 30 runs off 18 deliveries to help RCB get to 199 runs on the board at the end of the 20 overs.
He got a lifeline during his knock as was dropped by Cameron Green. Karthik went for a big shot off a slow ball and hit the ball high in the air. Green who initially judged the ball correctly did position himself under the ball but failed to keep a hold of it.
This led to Rohit Sharma fuming and collapsing in anguish, while the camera panned towards Anushka Sharma in stands, rejoicing as Dinesh Karthik lived to stay another day.
