Four days after being smashed for 48 runs against Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians medium-pacer Arjun Tendulkar made a fine comeback against Gujarat Titans and returned with figures of 1/9 in two overs on Tuesday (April 25).
In his four IPL 2023 appearances so far, Arjun hasn’t completed his quota of four overs in any of the games. While MI skipper Rohit Sharma has used him with the new ball, he hasn’t been given the ball in death overs much despite defending 20 runs in the final over against SRH.
Sharing his two cents on the game, former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull said Rohit doesn’t have confidence in Arjun's death overs skills yet.
“The last thing you want to do to a young man [Arjun Tendulkar] is throw him on the heap after one bad game because he has actually done a pretty good job. I don't think in all honesty, and I think Rohit Sharma knows he is not really a death bowler as of yet. He is not a guy they should be bowling in the last four or five. But he went to him to give him an opportunity and it cost them,” Doull told Cricbuzz.
During the match against PBKS, Arjun Tendulkar bowled the 16th over for MI and he was taken to the cleaners by Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh, smashing him for 31 runs.
"I think he is more like Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, who bowl two to three overs upfront where it swings a little bit, and then you forget about it. He is not experienced enough at the moment to be bowling at the back end of the innings," Doull added.
With four defeats from seven matches, Mumbai Indians are currently languishing at the seventh spot on IPL 2023 points table featuring 10 teams. They will next face Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (April 30).
