IPL 2023: “That's really disappointing,” Rohit Sharma rues lack of partnerships after MI’s heavy loss to GT

Mumbai Indians suffered a crushing 55-run defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans.

Rohit Sharma | BCCI-IPLRohit Sharma was a disappointed captain after Mumbai Indians’ (MI) crushing 55-run defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (April 25).

Opting to bowl first, MI conceded a mammoth total of 207/6 on the board. Shubman Gill (56 off 34), David Miller (46 off 22), Abhinav Manohar (42 off 21), and Rahul Tewatia (20* off 5) starred with the bat for GT.

In reply, the five-time champions managed to post 152/9 in their allotted 20 overs. It was a disappointing batting display as no one in the line-up managed to hit a half-century. Nehal Wadhera top scored with 21-ball 40.

Speaking after the game, MI skipper Rohit Sharma rued the lack of partnerships in their chase.

"That's really disappointing. We had pretty much control of the game till about 15 overs and then the last few overs went for way too many runs. Just about execution. We need to execute what's right on that pitch, who are the batsmen, that kind of a thing and we failed to do that which is why in the end they got way too many runs," Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

For the defending champions, Afghanistan’s spin duo of Noor Ahmad (3-37) and Rashid Khan (2-27) were the wrecker-in-chief with the ball, sharing five scalps between them.

Reflecting on the batting performance, Rohit said his team struggled from the very start and the loss was particularly disappointing since there was a lot of dew on the pitch.

"You gotta look at every team as different strength. We've got a very good batting lineup so we back ourselves to go out there and achieve that target. Today wasn't the day for us. We struggled from the start. We didn't get going. I can see there's lot of dew as well. If we would have batted well then probably you never know. We came pretty close last game to chase down 215 but we back ourselves and get those runs whatever is there on the board," he concluded.

Mumbai Indians will next face Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (April 30).
