IPL 2023: “He never gets carried away,” Gavaskar explains how Dhoni helped CSK overcome Du Plessis-Maxwell carnage

CSK defeated RCB by eight runs in a high-scoring thriller.

CSK got the better of RCB at Chinnaswamy Stadium | BCCI-IPLChennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a narrow eight-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a high-scoring thriller at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday (April 17).

Invited to bat first, CSK piled up a mammoth 226/6 in their allotted 20 overs on the back of Devon Conway’s 45-ball 83 and Shivam Dube’s 27-ball 52.

In reply, Faf du Plessis (62 off 33) and Glenn Maxwell (76 off 36) took the CSK attack to the cleaners, stitching a 126-run stand in just 61 balls. However, the duo got out in quick succession as RCB’s innings was eventually restricted to 218/8.

After the game, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan heaped praise on Conway, comparing him with former Australia batter Michael Hussey.

"Devon Conway's batting style is very similar to that of Michael Hussey. Once he starts scoring runs, he does not stop. His speciality was that as Faf du Plessis changed fielding positions, Conway took advantage of that and played shots in the gap," Pathan said while speaking on Star Sports' Cricket Live.

The high-voltage encounter showcased MS Dhoni's calming effect on the side and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said the reason why the visitors managed to weather the storm of Du Plessis and Maxwell is because of the CSK skipper behind the stumps.

"Players don't feel much pressure when MS Dhoni is leading the side. He's utterly cool and that helps. He stays in the moment and never gets carried away. Yes, he gives them some stares once they drop catches or miss field but he never puts them under pressure. That is the reason why CSK manage to brave crunch situations more often than not," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Chennai Super Kings will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk on Friday (April 21).
