IPL 2023: “I needed to make full use of powerplay,” says Rohit Sharma after scripting MI’s first win in IPL 16 over DC

Rohit slammed 65 off 45 balls in MI's six-wicket victory over DC.

Rohit Sharma | BCCI-IPLRohit Sharma was an elated captain as Mumbai Indians (MI) opened their winning account in the ongoing IPL with a six-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday (April 11).

Chasing 173 to win, MI rode on Rohit’s 45-ball 65 and Tilak Varma’s 29-ball 41 to get over the finishing line on the final delivery.

Speaking after the game, Rohit said he wanted to make a difference in the powerplay overs itself. Notably, the MI skipper took on the DC bowlers in the first 6 overs and aggregated 68 runs from it.

"When I went to bat I thought that I needed to make full use of the powerplay because as the game went on, I thought in my mind it's going to be tough with 2 couple of quality spinners they have so it was there in my mind to keep attacking, take my chances in the first 6 overs and then just see where the game is heading," Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

The five-time champions came into the game on the back of two successive defeats. The captain said everybody had been working really hard this season and he was glad that it showed in the result.

"We've been working really hard and finally to get the result feels really good. But we do understand it's not the end but the first win is always special so we're gonna cherish this," Sharma stated.

"I thought everyone put their hand up and it is something we spoke of before the game as well that if it is someone's day then make it really big and make it count for the team," he further added.

Mumbai Indians will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in their next match on Sunday (April 16) at the Wakhede Stadium.
