‘12 years of Hitman’ - Mumbai Indians celebrate Rohit Sharma’s dozen years with the IPL franchise

Rohit joined MI in IPL 2011 for $2 mn.

Rohit Sharma in MI in IPL 2011 | GettyMumbai Indians (MI) had not won any Indian Premier League (IPL) title despite having names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Andrew Symonds, and many more from 2008-2013 when they decided to punt on a young Rohit Sharma and made him captain a few games into that year’s tournament.

This was despite them buying Australian great Ricky Ponting in the auction to make him the captain of the side, but a poor start led to him stepping down and Rohit taking the lead and winning them their first IPL title that year.

In fact, it would surprise many, that Rohit Sharma started his IPL career with Deccan Chargers in 2008 and even won his first IPL title in 2009 in South Africa under Adam Gilchrist. He was bought by MI in the IPL 2011 mega auctions for $ 2mn.

Since then he has led MI to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Speaking on his 12-year anniversary, Rohit reflected on the journey.

I can’t believe it’s been 12 years at Mumbai Indians. It has been an extremely exciting and emotional journey for me. We’ve achieved so much together with stalwarts, youngsters, and our Paltan. Mumbai Indians is my family, and I want to thank my fellow players, fans, and management for all the love. Looking forward to creating many more memories and spreading more smiles for our Paltan,” he said.

He is also MI’s highest run-scorer in IPL history with 4709 runs in 182 matches, with a high score of 109*. During his MI career, he has bagged a century and 32 fifties.
