IPL 2022: “Felt that season didn’t really start for us till the first win,” says Tim David

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have had a disastrous campaign in IPL 2022. With only 3 wins in 12 matches, they are occupying the last spot on the points table.

In an otherwise disappointing campaign, the emergence of Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, and Tim David have been a few bright spots for the Mumbai team.

David, 26, stated on Monday (May 16) that he felt the MI season began once they won their first game in the ongoing IPL following an eight-game losing streak.

“Kind of felt like the season didn’t really start for us till we got that first win. Since then, we have played some really good cricket,” said the 26-year-old.

“We have won three of our last four games and there has been a good feeling in the team,” he added.

Tim David further said that the experience of sharing the dressing room with captain Rohit Sharma has been a good one.

“Obviously, Rohit’s played a lot of cricket, so it is about trying to gain some of his experiences, staying calm, things that work in Indian conditions, and how we want to play as a team together.”

“It’s been a good experience to share the dressing room with him and hopefully, it can continue,” he stated.

The Singaporean-Australian cricketer has scored 106 runs in 6 matches at an outstanding strike rate of 178.33. He revealed that he spends a lot of time in the nets trying to hit sixes.

“I spend a lot of my time in the nets trying to hit sixes. I think it’s about putting pressure on the bowler and recognizing the right situations when you can try that in a game.”

“There might be different pitches or grounds that suit power-hitting off particular bowlers. You have got to pick those moments, and also you have got to be aware that it’s not going to come off all the time, and batting in the middle-order can be risky,” reckoned the right-hander.

According to Tim David, it was all about going into the games with a clear head.

“And then once, it is all mental. I think it is the same for all batters. You have got to go in with a clear mind. If you don’t, if you are carrying things in to the game, you can get a patchy performance.”

“So it is about trying to get into that state where you can try and be as consistent as possible mentally.”

“And then if you trust your process, and stick to it, then that will most often bring the best results,” he signed off.

Meanwhile, the Rohit-led franchise has roped in Uttarakhand pacer Akash Madhwal as a replacement for batter Suryakumar Yadav, who was ruled out of the IPL owing to a left forearm muscle injury.

Madhwal, a 28-year-old medium-pacer, has played 15 T20s and grabbed 15 wickets at 26.6 apiece. He will join the Mumbai camp at the price of INR 20 Lakh.

“Madhwal has been with the MI as part of the support team. He was chosen at the MI preseason camp to join the support team and has over the months demonstrated his ability with the ball, earning him the opportunity to join the season squad,” a press release stated.

Mumbai Indians will take on Sunriser Hyderabad on May 17 before clashing with Delhi Capitals in their last encounter of IPL 2022.
