Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their impressive show in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as they defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 15 runs at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday (April 22).
Asked to bat first, the Royals rode on opener Jos Buttler’s dazzling century (116 off 65 balls) to pile up a massive 222/2 in 20 overs. Skipper Sanju Samson (46* off 19 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (54 off 35 balls) also made significant contributions with the bat.
In reply, DC managed 207/8 in their 20 overs. Many batters got starts but no one managed to take the team over the line. While openers Prithvi Shaw (37) and David Warner (28) provided blazing start, captain Rishabh Pant (44) and Lalit Yadav (37) played handy knocks in the middle-order.
In the last over, DC needed 36 runs and Rovman Powell smoked Obed McCoy’s first three deliveries for sixes, making the equation 18 off last three balls. However, a controversy erupted on the third delivery as the Delhi players and support staff members felt it was a no ball for height.
In particular, DC skipper Rishabh Pant was livid with the on-field umpires as they didn’t go upstairs to check whether the delivery was fair or not. In fact, Pant asked Powell and Kuldeep Yadav to come back to the dugout and also sent one of DC’s coaches Pravin Amre on the field to have a word with the umpires.
After that incident, Obed McCoy bounced back as he bowled a dot ball, conceded a couple and picked the wicket of Rovman Powell to seal the deal for RR. Prasidh Krishna was the stand-out bowler for Rajasthan Royals, returning with the figures of 3 for 22 in his four overs.
For his unruly behaviour, Rishabh Pant and the DC camp received a lot of flak from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
