Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced off in Match 33 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. MI came into the 'El Clasico' encounter with no points after six straight defeats, while CSK had just one win from their six previous matches.

CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja won the toss and elected to bowl first, as Mukesh Choudhary wrecked havoc with the new ball dismissing Rohit Sharma (0), Ishan Kishan (0) and Dewald Brevis (4) as MI slumped to 23/3 after 3 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav (32), Tilak Varma (51*), Hrithik Shokeen (25) and Jaydev Unadkat (19*) helped MI to put up a competitive total of 155/7 with some help from CSK's fielders who spilled almost half a dozen catches, with Jadeja himself dropping two.

CSK also got off to a poor start with Ruturaj Gaikwad falling for a first-ball duck and pinch-hitter Mitchell Santner scoring only 11. Robin Uthappa (30) and Ambati Rayudu (40) added a 50-run stand for the third wicket before a flurry of wickets in the middle overs left them at 106/6 in the 16th over. Daniel Sams recorded his IPL career-best figures of 4/30 to give MI a good chance of winning.

Veteran MS Dhoni (28*) was then joined in the middle by Dwaine Pretorius (22) and the duo added 33 brisk runs for the 7th wicket before the latter was dismissed by Unadkat in the final over with 17 to get off five balls.

Dwayne Bravo took a single off his first ball and handed the strike to Dhoni, with 16 needed in 4 balls. Dhoni then accumulated 12 runs off the next three balls to bring the equation down to four runs off the final ball, which the great finisher achieved successfully by hitting a boundary off a full toss.

For the umpteenth time, Dhoni kept his calm and won a match in the final over for CSK, while MI bagged an unwanted record of becoming the first team ever to lose their first seven matches in an IPL season.

As the players walked off, CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja who had come onto the ground was seen bowing down to the wicketkeeper-batter for his great finishing act which kept the hopes alive for the team after their second win of the season.
