Andre Russell and Umesh Yadav were too hot to handle for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) thrashed the PBKS by 6 wickets with 33 balls to spare to jump to the top of the points table in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2022).

On Friday, April 1, Umesh Yadav first wreaked havoc on the Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) batting line-up with the ball, snaring 4/23 to help the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) restrict the PBKS to 137 runs inside 18 overs.

KKR’s batting wasn’t very impressive, but Russell's outrageous unbeaten knock of 70 from 31 balls, with 8 sixes and 2 fours, helped KKR achieve the target in 14.3 overs to win the game by 6 wickets.

PBKS captain Mayank Agarwal said at the post-match presentation: “We didn't bat well enough. We showed some real fight with the ball initially and then Andre Russell came in and got going. Credit to him for taking the game away from us like that. I think it was a 170-ish wicket. We started off well but could not capitalize; there were a few soft dismissals.”

The skipper further added, “But it is fine as it is the start of the tournament. They (bowlers) pulled it back nicely for us. With (KKR) 4 for 50 (51 for 4), we were in the game, but Russell took the game away. There were a lot of positives to take away.”

Notably, PBKS is in the 7th place in the IPL 2022 points table with only one win from the two matches and will next take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 3 at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
