The IPL 2022 season kicks off on March 26 in Mumbai, with last year's finalists Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders clashing at Wankhede stadium.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) were among the franchises with a good set of players on paper after the IPL 2022 auction. The PBKS purchased players such as Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Chahar over the course of two days.
Mayank Agarwal was named the captain of the side for the IPL 2022.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar gave his thoughts on whether Punjab Kings will end their title drought this year. The PBKS is one of only three franchises (out of the original 8) to have never won the IPL.
“Punjab Kings is one of those teams who are yet to win the title. This time, I don't think they have an impact player in the team they have built. On the other hand, though, this could also benefit the side. When there are very low expectations, there is very less pressure,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
The former Indian cricketer went on to say that a team must be in a "constant cycle" of winning in the shortest format and that he isn't persuaded that PBKS can fight for the crown.
“When the pressure is less, the players are freer in their approach. In that aspect, I think Punjab Kings can surprise a few. Will they win the trophy? I doubt that. See, this is a T20 format and you have to be in that consistent cycle of winning,” said Gavaskar.
On March 27, the Punjab Kings will face Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first match.
