WATCH- Mix up at IPL 2022 auction allows Delhi Capitals to poach Khaleel Ahmed from Mumbai Indians

Khaleel Ahmed was sold to DC for INR 5.25 crores in IPL 2022 auction.

Confusion ran wild when MI and DC bid for Khaleel Ahmed in IPL 2022 auction | TwitterThe two-day IPL 2022 auction was a huge hit as it saw 204 players finding a home for the next three years as the ten franchises spent INR 550 crores to gain their services. The auction also saw Charu Sharma saving the day after British auctioneer Hugh Edmeades fell ill on day one of the auction.

However, now some eagle-eyed fans have spotted a mistake that helped Delhi Capitals gain player despite Mumbai Indians holding the winning bid. Whether it was the mistake of auctioneer Charu Sharma or the IPL management, it remains to be seen.

Khaleel Ahmed entered the auction with a base price of INR 50 lakhs after spending four years with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals engaged in a bidding war for the left-arm pacer.

A total of 36 bids saw his price rise to INR 500 lakh – a price at which Delhi appeared to raise the paddle – to which Mumbai was asked to counter. After Charu Sharma asked the MI to counter the bid with INR 525 lakhs, owner Akash Ambani raised his paddle in affirmative.

This brought the offer back to DC with the required bid then at 550 lakh. Delhi co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi was then seen getting into a discussion with his team, and that’s when the confusion began.

Grandhi seemingly raised his paddle for 550 lakh when he was pulled into a conversation by his teammate at the table, with Grandhi raising his hand as if to disregard the bid.

But seemingly, Charu Sharma and IPL auction management counted that as a bid, but he announced the price as 525, a number Mumbai had already offered. Even on the monitor, the ‘current bid’ read 550 lakh but was revised to 525 lakh a few seconds later.

The MI table after deliberation refused to take the deal to 550 lakh, following which Delhi secured the player.

Amidst the confusion, Khaleel Ahmed got richer by INR 525 lakh. It’s a price that Mumbai had offered too, but in all the confusion, Delhi took him home.
