IPL 2022: KKR named Shreyas Iyer as captain for upcoming IPL season

KKR roped in Shreyas Iyer for a hefty sum of INR 12.25 Crore at the IPL 2022 mega-auction.

Shreyas Iyer | BCCI/IPLKolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday (February 16) announced their captain for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Taking to Twitter, KKR revealed that Shreyas Iyer will lead the side in the forthcoming season.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, say hello to the NEW SKIPPER of the #GalaxyOfKnights অধিনায়ক #ShreyasIyer @ShreyasIyer15,” the franchise tweeted.

The development comes days after the IPL 2022 mega-auction, where KKR roped in Shreyas for a hefty sum of INR 12.25 Crore.

Shreyas Iyer has the experience of captaining the IPL side Delhi Capitals. He produced impressive results for Delhi, leading the franchise to playoffs in 2019 and then followed it with their maiden appearance in the final in 2020.

Ahead of the IPL 2021, Shreyas had sustained a shoulder injury and missed the first half of the tournament, which saw Rishabh Pant being appointed as Delhi’s new captain. Although Iyer returned to the side for the IPL 14 second phase, the DC management decided to continue with Pant as skipper.

Since Shreyas Iyer wanted to play as a captain, he decided to enter into the auction with a base price of INR 2 crore and his former franchise Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans also showed interest in him but KKR eventually bagged the cricketer.
