IPL 2021: "Will probably see a lot more sixes and boundaries" - Gavaskar backs Dhoni to improve form

Sunil Gavaskar feels Dhoni should bat at No. 4 or No. 5, for CSK to entertain his fans.

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar said it was nice to see MS Dhoni batting higher up the order during the 15th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 21 (Wednesday).

Gavaskar also believes that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Dhoni can only get better with his batting form as the tournament progresses, saying fans will see more sixes and boundaries coming off his bat if he gets game time with the bat in the middle at No. 4 or No.5 in the ongoing IPL 2021.

Dhoni batted at No. 7 for CSK in the IPL 2021 so far, but the CSK captain decided to promote himself to No. 4 during their last IPL 14 contest against KKR and hit 17 from just 8 balls including 2 four to make sure the three-time IPL champions posted 220 on the board against KKR.

The CSK successfully defended the total as they thrashed KKR by 18 runs to register their third straight win in the ongoing IPL 14. They have now moved to the top of the IPL 2021 points table with 6 points.

Gavaskar told Star Sports:It is (special). The whole of India loves watching him bat. He has got something special. The more he gets to bat, the better he is going to be as the tournament progresses and we will probably see a lot more sixes and boundaries coming off his bat the more we saw him bat at No. 4 or No. 5.”

He concluded, “He sussed up the situation very well. He realized that more than Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, or Ravindra Jadeja, he was needed to keep the momentum going. That's what he did with that little cameo of an innings. He made sure CSK didn't take their foot off the accelerator.”

Noteworthy, CSK will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore in their final match of the season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (April 25).
