Rishabh Pant started his IPL captaincy on a winning note, as Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 7 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday (April 10).
After the game, Pant expressed satisfaction over his team’s performance before adding that he has learnt a lot from MS Dhoni and the CSK skipper has been his "go-to man".
Asked to bat first, CSK posted 188/7 in 20 overs on the back of Suresh Raina’s 36-ball 54. Moeen Ali (36 off 24 balls), Sam Curran (34 off 15 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (26* off 17 balls) also made notable contributors with the bat.
Avesh Khan (2-23) and Chris Woakes (2-18) were the stand-out bowlers for Delhi, taking two wickets each.
In reply, DC rode on Shikhar Dhawan’s 54-ball 85 and Prithvi Shaw’s 38-ball 72 to overhaul the target with 8 balls to spare.
"It always feels good when you get the win in the end. In the middle phase, I was under some pressure. But Avesh and Tom (Curran) did well in the middle to restrict them to 188. It was very special walking out for the toss with MS," Pant said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
"He has been my go-to man. I have learnt a lot from him. We were thinking as to what we will do without Nortje and Rabada and I thought we had to do with the options we have. No, there was no effort for the NRR as it is still early stages in the tournament," he added.
Chasing the target, Dhawan and Shaw added 138 runs for the opening wicket to take the game away from CSK and Pant praised the duo for playing some good cricketing shots.
"Prithvi and Shikhar did well for us in the powerplay. They kept it simple and played some good cricketing shots," the DC captain said.
Delhi Capitals will take on Rajasthan Royals in their next game on April 15 at the Wankhede Stadium.
