Newly appointed Rajasthan Royals' skipper Sanju Samson said that he wants to learn as much as he can from RR’s Director of Cricket and Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara in IPL 2021.

Steve Smith captained Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2020, but the franchise surprised everyone and released a swashbuckling batsman before the IPL 2021 auction.

With Steve Smith being released, Sanju Samson was appointed as the new skipper of the Rajasthan-based franchise.

In a recent interview on RR's website, Sanju Samson said that a lot of different things are going through his mind as the leader of his team but he would look to keep things simple going into the new season of the IPL. He added that he had never imagined becoming the captain of the franchise.

“Yes, I am very much looking forward to leading the Royals. Definitely, a lot of different thoughts are going through my mind, but I would like to keep it simple. I am happy to take on this role. To be very honest, until last year, I never felt that I may possibly be the leader of the Royals,” Sanju Samson told Rajasthan Royals.

Sanju Samson will work with Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who also was appointed by Rajasthan Royals as their director of cricket for IPL 2021.

“My first memory of Sanga is definitely his cover drive and I loved his batting. This is a dream come true and it was very exciting to know that I will be working so closely with a legend like Kumar Sangakkara,” he said.

Samson further said that he’s waiting to learn every side of Sangakkara in IPL 14.

“If you look up to people like Rahul Dravid, Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, or Ricky Ponting, they are legends of their time. Everyone was so evenly balanced and everything they did, it looked perfect. I am waiting to learn every side of Sangakkara in this IPL season,” he concluded.

Rajasthan Royals will start their IPL 2021 campaign against Punjab Kings on 12th April in Mumbai. It would be interesting to see how newly-appointed skipper Sanju Samson will lead his team in their upcoming IPL campaign.
