Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) newly appointed captain Sanju Samson on Saturday (April 3) turned down comparisons with the legendary MS Dhoni, saying nobody can be like the former India skipper, who will lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming IPL.
"I don't think anyone can be like MS Dhoni. I would like to be myself. Sanju Samson will be good enough," the Rajasthan Royals website quoted Samson as saying.
Samson was handed Rajasthan’s captaincy after the franchise released Steve Smith ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. Even though international stars as Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes are part of the RR squad, he got the nod for the high-profile position.
Samson thanked fans for supporting the Royals and promised to bring smiles back on their faces in this year's IPL.
"I would like to thank each and every fan out there for supporting our team and being with us no matter what. I'll make sure that we play some good cricket for you guys and bring a smile on your faces. Thanks a lot, guys," he said.
During the IPL 2021 auction, RR roped in South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris for a whopping 16.25 crore, making him the most expensive buy in the auction history.
The Royals also bought Bangladesh’s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rehman and India all-rounder Shivam Dube at the mini-auction in February this year.
"I think our team management did a fantastic job in the auction and we got almost every player we wanted. Each and every player's role is going to be crucial in this season," said Samson.
IPL 2021 is due to begin on April 9, with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener at Chepauk.
RR will open their campaign against Punjab Kings on April 12 in Mumbai.
