IPL 2021: Down with COVID-19, Akshar Patel set to miss Delhi Capitals’ tournament opener on April 10

Akshar has been kept in isolation outside the team's bio-bubble.

Akshar Patel | BCCI/IPLIn a huge blow to the Delhi Capitals (DC), Akshar Patel has tested positive for COVID-19 positive and the spin all-rounder will now miss the team’s IPL 2021 opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 10 due to quarantine protocols.

The Delhi-based franchise on Saturday (April 3) confirmed that Akshar has been kept in isolation outside the bio-bubble.

“He had checked into the team hotel in Mumbai on March 28, 2021, with a negative report. His report from the second COVID test, came positive,” DC said in a statement.

“He is currently in isolation at a designated medical care facility. The Delhi Capitals medical team is in constant touch with Akshar and ensuring his safety and well-being. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

According to BCCI SOP for IPL 2021, any player who catches COVID-19 must isolate in the designated area outside the bio-secure environment for a minimum of 10 days.

Since his quarantine period will be over on April 12, Akshar will not be available for DC’s opener against CSK at the Wankhede Stadium. He might miss the second game too on April 15 against Rajasthan Royals.

As per the SOP, the infected person will undergo an RT-PCR test on Day 9 and Day 10 of the isolation period. If both the test results return negative and he/she does not have any symptoms for more than 24 hours then the individual will be allowed to re-enter the bio-secure bubble.

BCCI and the IPL franchises must be wary as the groundstaff in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium have reportedly tested positive for Coronavirus as well.

Four franchises namely Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals have set up their base in Mumbai. Wankhede is slated to host 10 IPL games this season.

The IPL 2021 is due to begin on April 9, with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener at Chepauk.
