Mumbai Indians (MI) faced Kings XI Punjab in the 36th match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (October 18).
Opting to bat first, MI posted 176/6 in 20 overs. Opener Quinton de Kock was the top-scorer with 43-ball 53. Krunal Pandya (34 off 30 balls), Kieron Pollard (34* off 12 balls) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (24* off 12 balls) also made significant contributions to the total.
For KXIP, Mohammad Shami was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2 wickets by conceding 30 runs in his four overs. Arshdeep Singh also took a couple of scalps by giving away 35 runs in his three overs.
Chasing the target, Kings XI were cruising when skipper KL Rahul (77 off 51 balls) and Chris Gayle (24) were at the crease. But as soon as their partnership was broken, KXIP failed to keep the required run-rate under check and lost Nicholas Pooran (24) and Glenn Maxwell in quick succession.
Thanks to Deepak Hooda (23* off 16 balls) and Chris Jordan’s (13 off 8 balls) effort in the death overs, Punjab managed to tie the match on the last delivery.
In the one-over eliminator, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami exhibited their brilliance, conceding only 5 runs each as the game went into another Super-Over.
In the second Super-Over, KXIP dominated MI. Chris Jordan gave away 11 runs against Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard while Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal took just four balls to knock off the runs versus Trent Boult.
Cricket experts were left speechless as KXIP defeated the defending champions in Super-Over 2.0.
