IPL 2020: "He's a class act”, Gavaskar expects Kohli to score 400-500 runs in this year’s IPL

The RCB skipper is having a tough time in the ongoing IPL in UAE.

Virat Kohli | IANSBatting legend Sunil Gavaskar expects Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli to aggregate at least 400-500 runs in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) in UAE.

Kohli is having a tough time in the IPL 2020 as he registered the scores of 14, 1 and 3 from three games so far, with RCB winning two of them.

Gavaskar however, is confident that Kohli, who holds the record of most runs in a single IPL edition (973 runs in 2016), may have had a poor start but he will make up for the lack of runs towards the end of the tournament.

"He's a class act everybody knows that. So what if he's had 3 quiet matches, he's the kind of batsman who will make up for it towards the end.

"He may have started slowly but by the time the tournament ends he will have 400-500 runs which is what he gets every year. There was that one year when he got almost a 1000 runs (in 2016) and hundreds as well (4).

"He may not get 900 runs (in IPL 2020) because the first 3 matches have been quiet but 500 runs totally, they are all written there," Gavaskar said on air after RCB's match against MI, as quoted by India Today.

Sunil Gavaskar’s comments came just a few days after he found himself in hot water for his remarks on Kohli during commentary in the 6th game of IPL 2020 between RCB and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).

The controversy erupted when Gavaskar said on air: “ab jo lockdown tha toh unhone [Virat Kohli] sirf Anushka ke saath bowling ki practice ki hai, usse toh kuch bhi nahi banna” (In the lockdown he only practiced with Anushka, that won't help him).

This led to a huge storm on social media with Gavaskar accused of being sexist. Kohli's wife Anushka Sharma also took serious offense to the former India captain’s statement.

Later, Gavaskar clarified the issue and said that people completely misunderstood and misquoted him.

"Firstly, I would like to say it again. Where am I blaming her? I am not blaming her. I am only saying that the video said that she was bowling to Virat. Virat has played only that bowling during the lockdown period. It's a tennis ball, a fun game that people have to pass time during the lockdown. That's all. Where am I blaming her for Virat's failures?" Gavaskar told India Today.
