IPL 2020: "Third umpire should have intervened," says Tom Moody on the short-run call controversy

A wrong short-run call by on-field umpire robbed KXIP a win in their match against DC on Sunday.

The second fixture of IPL 2020 saw a controversial decision made in the final stages which changed the result of the game.

In the penultimate over of the second innings, on-field umpire Nitin Menon called a short-run by Chris Jordan. The replays showed that the bat had crossed the crease and the run was legal. The decision spurred controversy and has been the talking point of the game.

The decision was so crucial as Kings XI Punjab ended on the same runs as DC and tied the game. They later lost the Super Over thanks to Kagiso Rabada's genius.

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody believes that such cases are not talked about until they happen. He believes that the third umpire should have taken the call on this decision once the replays showed that the run was legal.

Moody told ESPN, "Unfortunately, things like that aren't thought through until incidents like that happen. Without a doubt, the third umpire should have made a ruling but they need to declare that that is part of the rules prior to the start of the tournament. It clearly isn't part of the rules."

The former Australian cricketer also went on to express his opinion on Twitter saying, "This shouldn't happen with the technology available. This was a line call like a no ball, run out or stumping we can't afford to have these errors influencing the outcome of matches in such a competitive tournament. #DCvKXIP"

Delhi Capitals chased down 3 runs in the Super Over and won their first game of IPL 2020.
