Having won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title four times, Mumbai Indians (MI) are certainly the most successful franchise in the T20 competition.
On Sunday (May 17), former India opener Gautam Gambhir explained the reason behind MI’s success over the years.

As per Gambhir, the MI think tank have never shied away from making tough decisions when needed. He also pointed out that their management have always been able to differentiate between emotional and practical calls.
“They don’t take emotional decisions. They take practical decisions and in sports, when you’re making a strong decision, there shouldn’t be any place for emotions,” Gambhir said on the Cricket Connected Show on Star Sports.
Mumbai Indians’ all four IPL triumphs have come under the leadership of Rohit Sharma in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. They also lifted the Champions League Twenty20 title twice (2011, 2013).
The Mumbai-based franchise is also known for having a shrewd scouting team, which follows the game keenly throughout India to pick right players at the auction.
Gambhir, who himself led KKR to two IPL titles, hailed MI’s talent acquisition team for unearthing terrific players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya brothers among others.
“If you see, dropping Ricky Ponting as a captain, giving it to Rohit Sharma. Plus, I think their scouts have been absolutely phenomenal. Picking Jasprit Bumrah from nowhere, picking Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya from nowhere. We don’t give enough credit to the scouts. Look at what they’ve achieved. Look at their squad… I think theirs is the strongest squad that’s ever been in any IPL so far,” he said.
