Suresh Raina has a massive legacy with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was a cornerstone of CSK's success for over a decade, contributing significantly to their multiple title wins and becoming their highest run-scorer during his prime.
Speaking to his former India and CSK teammate Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter’s YouTube channel, Raina highlighted his deep loyalty to CSK and his strong desire to give back to the franchise that lovingly dubbed him "Chinna Thala".
During the interview, Raina publicly confirmed his eagerness to join CSK’s support staff, revealing that he has already communicated his interest to the franchise management for a coaching role but is yet to hear from them.
“I’ve played almost 16 or 17 years in the IPL. I’ve scored enough for us (CSK), played in finals, and handled a lot of high-pressure games. I’ve asked them (CSK), and now it’s on them to decide. It’s their team now – we (Raina and Ashwin) are both retired, so they have to make the call," Raina said.
“We’ve done our part, won trophies, and lifted titles together. Now, they need to see how we can contribute to CSK. I’ve been playing since day one, so if they feel I’m capable," he added.
Raina emphasized that he is completely flexible and open to working in any support capacity, explicitly stating, "Yellow matters to us," and that his main motivation is seeing the team win trophies.
“I would love to work with them in any capacity! For me, as long as I’m with the boys and they’re winning trophies, that’s what matters – because yellow is everything to us," he remarked.
The former left-handed batter also highlighted his extensive background across international cricket, World Cups, and numerous IPL finals alongside MS Dhoni, noting that he understands how to navigate high-pressure situations.
“I’ve played international cricket, the IPL, and World Cups, so I’ve experienced every side of the game. I know what kind of pressure you face, especially when playing so many finals—winning some, losing some. I’ve learned how to handle that pressure and how to get the best out of yourself mentally. We must have played nine or ten finals together and won four of them. I’m still the highest run-scorer in IPL playoffs, so I know what I’ve achieved in this tournament, and I just want to give that back to the players," Raina said.
“They’re doing really well and playing an aggressive, different brand of cricket, Ash. But they still need someone who can guide them on managing stress and workload. It’s not about lecturing them on technique—it’s all about how to stay consistent season after season, and that’s what truly matters," he concluded.
Suresh Raina’s public declaration comes at a time when Chennai Super Kings are undergoing a massive transition in their backroom staff ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
The franchise recently ended its historic 16-year association with head coach Stephen Fleming, appointing former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as the new chief coach. Bowling coach Eric Simons is also out of the coaching staff, with former India pacer Mohit Sharma being handed the responsibilities.
Moreover, the five-time champions have parted ways with their long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey, with Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty being appointed as assistant coaches. Sridharan Sriram (assistant coach) and James Foster (fielding coach) were the only support staff who have been retained from last season.
Interestingly, CSK management has indicated that they will not appoint a designated batting coach for the upcoming cycle, intending for Batty to pull double duty as a batting mentor.
