Hardik Pandya led MI from IPL 2024 to 2026.

Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time IPL champions, are yet to confirm any trade offers for Hardik Pandya. Pandya, who had been traded in by MI in IPL 2024 and captained them till IPL 2026, has been on the market for a trade before the IPL 2027 season.

However, despite reported talks with several franchises, MI hasn’t reached an agreement with any of the potential buyers, which might mean Hardik Pandya might remain with the MI franchise for IPL 2027.

As per a PTI report, sources close to Hardik Pandya believe that there is a 90 percent chance that a trade will happen sooner or later. Hardik, however, could stay for another season if MI failed to find a suitable replacement.

"Hardik isn't a confrontational person. In case MI doesn't get a suitable trade for him, he will certainly stay back for a year and give his 110-120 percent. It won't matter if he is the captain or not; there will be no lack of commitment. But trade isn't something that is in his hands. It is up to MI ownership to see the pros and cons for any trade offer that comes along," an IPL source told PTI.

However, it is likely that Hardik Pandya will not be captaining Mumbai Indians in IPL 2027, as they explore new captaincy options.

Mi recently revamped their coaching staff, with Kieron Pollard replacing Mahela Jayawardene as head coach. The Mumbai Indians decision-making committee will have to select a possible skipper, and the likely candidates include either of the tried and tested Rohit Sharma or the comparatively young Tilak Varma.

The other two senior players are Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of the T20 world cup-winning side, and another super senior player, Jasprit Bumrah, whom many feel should not be burdened with captaincy responsibilities.

MI is possibly looking for a stop-gap arrangement as captain given that IPL 2027 will have a mega auction where most teams will be rebuilding their squads from scratch with an eye on the next five to seven years.

Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma | MI X

MI potentially has two options: go back to five-time IPL winning captain Rohit Sharma or punt on inexperienced Tilak Varma, giving the franchise a fresh start.

Rohit will turn 40 midway through the next IPL season. Logically, the IPL 2027 money-loaded tournament will be the last time as a player in the MI team before retirement from cricket after the ODI World Cup of 2027, for which he is preparing in full steam.

As far as smart and shrewd thinking and leadership on the ground, Rohit does not have any other choice available; however, a major shift has taken place in the way the minds of the teams in the franchises work by taking care of the bigger picture and analytics.

Tilak, the one seen as a potential leader in the making and MI-born and bred boy, can serve as an understudy for at least the next five years or more.

The new head coach, Kieron Pollard, will have a say in who becomes the new MI captain, as he shares a close relationship with Rohit Sharma and has seen Tilak Varma grow as a batter from start.

In IPL 2027, there will not be any significant changes in the MI team structure; thus, it becomes evident that Rohit will continue to be the best captain irrespective of the player selection made.

Talking about Tilak, it must be understood that he will like to begin his career as the captain with a blank canvas and get some say in recruiting players in the mega-auction.
