Rohit Sharma likely to replace Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain in IPL 2027- Report

Hardik Pandya had replaced Rohit Sharma as MI captain in IPL 2024.

Rohit Sharma | IPL-BCCIIf reports are to be believed, Mumbai Indians (MI) are likely to turn to their most successful captain, Rohit Sharma, to lead them in the IPL 2027 season. These reports have put the focus back on Hardik Pandya’s future with the MI franchise and their plans for captaincy going forward.

In 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, Rohit guided the Mumbai Indians to five IPL championships. But before the 2024 season, Hardik Pandya, who won the IPL 2022 for Gujarat Titans, was traded in by MI and made captain in place of Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai finished last in Hardik's debut season as captain, despite the fact that the shift in leadership was a hot topic of conversation. Although the five-time champions haven't won the IPL since 2020 and haven't made it back to the final, they made it to the playoffs in 2025.

According to India Today, although Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav had also surfaced as possible contenders for the captaincy, Mumbai may now choose to reinstate Rohit, who is still the team's most successful captain.

Reportedly, Mumbai and Rajasthan were in talks about a potential agreement featuring Hardik, but at one point the negotiations seemed to come to a standstill. The details of any trade, including the player Mumbai could receive in exchange, would need to be agreed upon by both teams. No formal confirmation of a contract has been made.

If a trade with the Rajasthan Royals is made possible, Mumbai might consider Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-handed opener might provide the team with a long-term option at the top of the order and bolster their Indian batting lineup.

Bringing in a younger Indian opener might also help Mumbai get ready for the future, since Rohit is getting close to 40. Yashasvi Jaiswal might be a crucial member of the team for many years to come if Rohit ultimately chooses to retire from the IPL.

But rather than being a definite development, this is still a potential scenario. Mumbai's ambitions for the team and the conditions of any possible trade will determine their choice regarding Hardik.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are also contenders to become MI captain | IPL-BCCISuryakumar Yadav was the vice-captain of the MI team under Hardik Pandya and led the team in four games that the all-rounder missed due to injuries. This had increased the likelihood that Suryakumar would take over as captain in the event that Hardik departed the team. But things seem to have shifted, as Rohit is now supposedly the front-runner.

Tilak Varma can be a longer captaincy option, and his recent appointment as India’s T20I vice-captain has fueled discussions about his future leadership prospects. The choice appeared to indicate a potential long-term strategy for Tilak in Indian cricket.

It also raised the prospect that Mumbai would consider developing him to be their next captain. However, recent sources indicate that the franchise may choose Rohit's expertise for IPL 2027 over Hardik, Suryakumar, or Tilak.

Rohit's best defense is still his record as captain of the Mumbai Indians. He was crucial to the team's success during that time, leading them to all five IPL titles. Mumbai has had difficulty making it back to the final and hasn't won the competition since 2020.

Mumbai seemed to have lost some of the tenacity that had enabled them to win championships under Rohit. Thus, Rohit's comeback might be an effort to improve the team's performance as well as its leadership.

Rohit's age is another important consideration for Mumbai Indians. He will turn 40 during the 2027 IPL season, with the ODI World Cup scheduled for later that year. There are questions about his longevity in the IPL and whether he will play beyond the IPL 2027 season.

This means if Rohit Sharma is made the MI captain in IPL 2027, the franchise management will have to maximize their preparations for their captaincy going forward.

According to sources, Rohit is currently the front-runner to captain the Mumbai Indians in the 2027 Indian Premier League. The scenario may alter before the start of the next season, and the team still has about six months to finalize its plans.
