After finally breaking their IPL trophy drought with their first-ever title win in 2025, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) loved it so much that they repeated the feat in IPL 2026. RCB defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2026 final on May 31 in Ahmedabad.
Backed by a screaming fan base, RCB made some big changes to their previous workings under head coach Andy Flower, director of cricket Mo Bobat, and mentor Dinesh Karthik.
When an important player was injured, the RCB of old had to fear and watch as the entire season quickly fell apart. But for the contemporary RCB, it just meant pulling a separate lever.
After the historic defense of their crown, former captain Dinesh Karthik spoke on JioHotstar and aptly described this philosophical transformation.
"Like you said, Irfan, a lot of planning goes into it. It’s one thing to have a good starting XI or XII, but in a tournament this long, you know there will be injuries, players arriving late, or even personal issues at times. You need to be prepared for all those situations.
We try our best. Across skill sets, we’ve had some really good backups. When Salt left, Bethell came in. When Bethell got injured, another player stepped up. When Josh Hazlewood wasn't around, we had Duffy, who was the world No. 1 bowler. We had quality replacements available,” Karthik stated in JioStar.
Andy Flower and Mo Bobat's expertise is evident in the abundance of tactical choices provided to captain Rajat Patidar over these two championship seasons.
Purchasing international talent is only one aspect of a mega-auction success story; another is carefully identifying indigenous potential and providing them with complete structural clarity.
Karthik pointed out that the culture developed behind the scenes is solely responsible for this smooth, plug-and-play success.
"Rasikh Salam didn't get a game for us last year. But this season, the way he has performed under pressure, constantly bowling the tough overs and standing up to the challenge, has been outstanding. He's got character. A lot of that comes from the way we practice and the clarity of roles that Andy Flower and Mo Bobat have given the players. Everyone knows exactly what they need to do when they step into the RCB dressing room, and that keeps us in good stead,” he added.
When asked about the mechanism that made this consecutive title run possible, Karthik smiled. "I don't think they would mind that. Ideally, we probably wouldn't want a mega auction, but let's leave that discussion for another day."
RCB did not simply win back-to-back titles by substituting an army of excellent backups and complete tactical clarity for the previous ethos of individual dependence. They established an empire.
