Former batter from India, Aakash Chopra, thinks that India's Rohit Sharma must be disappointed because he lost his wicket in the first ODI match against West Indies. This game was held on Sunday, September 27, at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

Chasing a target of 296 runs, India won the game by eight wickets, scoring the required runs in 41.4 overs. In the process, Virat Kohli scored 139* off 88 balls, Shubman Gill made 110 off 108 balls, and Rohit Sharma, despite a good start, only managed 32 runs off 35 balls with two fours and three sixes.

According to Chopra, Rohit will be frustrated owing to his good start but losing his wicket due to his big shot. He also mentioned that the experienced batter will try to correct his mistake in the next match at Guwahati.

“He (Rohit Sharma) was batting quite well, actually, right through to his wicket in the end. And this is something that must be bothering him as well: that he had got a start, the ball was coming nicely onto the bat, and he was looking good. So then, why play that one shot?

That is something he would want to correct. He would want to correct it when they head to Guwahati. But so far, so good. I mean, he batted well too. It could be that when they go to Guwahati, it will be all about Rohit Sharma,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Rohit Sharma is just 73 runs short of a major milestone in ODIs, as he will become only the third Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to achieve 12,000 ODI runs.

Aakash Chopra also talked about India captain Shubman Gill, who hammered 110 off 108 balls with 13 fours and a six, his 10th century in ODIs. He had also added 151 runs for the second wicket with Virat Kohli before his dismissal.

Chopra praised Gill for his batting and was confident that Gill has the ability to reach the 15,000-run milestone if he plays 300 ODIs. But he also said that, realistically speaking, Gill might not get a chance to play 300 ODIs due to the reduced number of matches in the format, but added that if the opener somehow manages to do so, he would be able to achieve the feat.

“If he continues to play like this, then one thought definitely comes to my mind. This is a question that is often asked: if he plays the same amount of cricket, if he also plays 300 matches, will he also be able to score 15,000 runs? Within just 300 matches? There are so many ups and downs. Sometimes you get injured. Sometimes you lose your form. But from what we have seen so far, Shubman Gill has the ability to do it.

The thing is, he probably won’t play 300 ODIs in his career because there simply aren’t that many matches anymore. From next year onwards, there will be even fewer. But if, somehow, he was able to play that many ODIs, he would actually get there. I mean, he has the ability to play the game, the ability to understand the game, and the hunger that he has,” Chopra concluded.

Shubman Gill has played 68 ODIs since his India debut in 2019 and has scored 3489 runs at an average of 61.21 at a strike rate of 100.98. He has 10 centuries and 20 fifties, with the best score of 208.
