India captain Rohit Sharma was not happy with the way Rishabh Pant was given out caught bat-pad by the TV umpire, as he claimed that there was no conclusive evidence as the bat and pad were quite close to one another.
This comes after India lost the third and final Test to New Zealand in Mumbai to suffer their first Test series white-wash at home since 2000. India failed to chase 147 runs and were bundled for 121 runs, with Rishabh Pant top-scoring with 64 and Ajaz Patel taking 6 wickets.
Rishabh Pant had advanced down the track to Patel and played a defensive shot. The ball seemingly hit the pad and ballooned up in the air, with Tom Blundell taking a simple catch. The on-field umpire didn’t give Pant out and the Kiwis took the DRS.
The replays revealed a possible gap between the bat and the pad, while the ultraedge detected a spike as the ball passed the edge. But at the same moment, the bat had hit the pad, causing uncertainty.
After taking his time, the TV umpire determined that there was enough evidence to rule Rishabh Pant out. Pant even informed the on-field umpire that the bat had hit the pad and was left speechless after being called out.
Rohit Sharma, Team India's captain, was not satisfied with the decision to overturn Rishabh Pant's not-out ruling during the second innings of the final Test against New Zealand.
“Honestly, I don't know. If we say something, it isn't accepted well. If there is no conclusive evidence, the decision has to stand with that of the on-field umpire. That's what I've been told. I don't know how the decision was overturned. The bat was clearly close to the pad,” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match press conference.
“I don't know if it's the right thing for me to talk about. It is something for the umpires to think about. Have the same rules for every team, don't keep changing your mind. That dismissal was very crucial from our point of view. Rishabh was looking really good and it felt that he would take us through. But it was an unfortunate dismissal, and we were bowled out right after,” he added.
India’s next Test assignment will be in Australia where they will play a five-Test series starting November 22.
